Taking Cialis as a preworkout??

I’m sure you’ve heard about Viagra or Cialis. (Sildenafil, tadalafil respectively)

They have cornered the market for erectile dysfunction for YEARS.

Alongside this, people recreationally use these two to enhance sexual performance and pleasure.

I’m not going to talk about either one of these benefits, but instead, its novel application as an ergogenic aid.

Crazy right? talk about working your dick off in the gym (rimshot)

How Cialis/Viagra work (A quick rundown on PDE-5 Inhibitors)

Viagra and Cialis are both prescription medications called “PDE-5 Inhibitors”

They work by inhibiting an enzyme called “Phosphodiesterase”

When you get a lot of blood flowing, your body stimulates Nitric Oxide (NO) production. NO activates guanylate cyclase to convert guanosine triphosphate (GTP) into cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).

When there is a sufficient accumulation of cGMP, it leads to smooth muscle relaxation.
These drugs look almost identical to cGMP metabolites inside of your body so they’ll essentially get degraded instead of the cGMP.

Meaning that the blood flow sticks around longer as a result.

(this is how you keep erectile quality higher and stay harder)

In skeletal muscle, we can actually see something quite similar happening.

PDE-5 Inhibitors also non-selectively inhibit other phosphodiesterase families.

Here’s a quick table of the other families and the systems they affect.
(Note, this isn’t ALL structures and functions, as there are 11 families and over 80 different total variances in metabolism and interactions in the body)

FamilySystems/Organs/
1Brain, heart, vascular smooth muscle
2Brain, heart, corpus cavernosum (Corpus cavernosum is the spongy tissue that aids erections)
3Heart, corpus cavernosum, liver pancreas, vascular smooth muscle, platelets
4Lungs, vascular smooth muscle
5Corpus cavernosum, lung, vascular smooth muscle, platelets, brain, esophagus
6Retina
7Skeletal muscle, T cells
8Testis, thyroid
9Broadly expressed, not well characterized (meaning it has a very generalized role)
10Brain, testes
11Skeletal muscle, prostate, liver, kidney, pituitary, testis

So how does this apply to pumps in the gym?

The above table is just a glimpse into all the systems that can be impacted by the use of PDE Inhibitors.

We can see that PDE-7 and PDE-11 also have some selectivity for “skeletal muscle tissue”

Why does that matter when we use something specifically for PDE-5?
The early pioneered PDE-5 Inhibitors (like Viagra and Cialis) are much less refined than things like Levitra (Vardenafil.) This means that they are more likely to have an impact on other PDE subfamilies.

If you dig further into the research on Cialis you’ll notice that a fair few complaints about it are related to back pains.

This is because of increased blood flow to the midback causing an uncomfortable tightness.

(Very similar to the kind of discomfort caused by heavy deadlifts or squats.)

It’s speculated to be because of Cialis’s ability to impact PDE11 families.

By the same mechanism, it also helps attenuate other muscle pumps in the gym.

How I used Cialis for better results in the gym.

I talk about it a bit longer here in this video:

but, essentially I would take 10mg every other day.

I’d notice that on the days where I took the Cialis and went to the gym I had INSANELY good pumps.

When I would do heavy deadlifts or squats, TAURINE and loads of water was absolutely NECESSARY.

Some people do 20mg some do 5mg.

It’s very individual specific, but most commonly its 10mg for the people I talk to and myself.

What kind of results can you expect from incorporating it?

Honestly, don’t pick this up thinking you’ll be finding the new best way to get stronger and bigger.

The extra blood flow helps cosmetically and you can assume there’s some enhanced recovery too.

(better blood and nutrient flow to the muscle is always a good thing)

If you have the option to choose between Viagra and Cialis, this is maybe one thing to think of in terms of long term application.

Again, it’s not SUPER important for benefits in the gym, but it’s at least worth mentioning.

If you guys have any experience using either Viagra or Cialis as a preworkout , let me know! either on the video or in the comments section here on the blog!

Until Next time, Toodles!
